Your Library Card

Who can get a library card, how to apply, and how to use your library card.

Who can get a card

  • All residents of Iowa are eligible for a library card at no charge.
  • There is a $1.00 fee for a replacement card.
  • To apply for a card, a person must show identification with their current address.
  • Any person under age 9 must have a parent or guardian's signature on the application.
  • Patrons are responsible for all fines and fees on their account.
  • Patrons are responsible for notifying library staff of a change of address.
  • Library cards are renewed annually.
    • No card will be renewed if there are outstanding fines or fees.
    • Library items cannot be checked out on an expired card.
  • It is not necessary to have your library card to check out items.

Using your card

  • Books, magazines, audio and video material can be checked out.
  • Loan periods vary and will be printed on the receipt.
  • There is no limit to the number of items borrowed
  • Items kept past their due date will incur an overdue charge. Charges vary by format of item.
  • Items may be renewed, provided there are no holds on them.
  • Overdue notices will be mailed when an item is two and four weeks overdue.  Postage will be charged on all notices mailed.
  • Be advised that keeping an item over two months without communicating with library staff is considered theft of city property and legal steps will be taken.
  • If an item is not available, it can be reserved in person, via phone or e-mail.
  • A request to borrow an item from another library must be made in person.
  • During library hours, items should be returned to the circulation desk.
  • There is an outside drop box for after-hours returns.
